Breed: Pomeranian, Sex: Male, Weight: 7.8kg, Age: 6 years and 5 months
This is a very overweight Pomeranian. He is more than double his normal weight, which is usually about 3 to 3.5 kg. He has had problems with his hip joints since he was a puppy and has not been treated. The dog has recently developed the following symptoms: hind limb limp, weakness, shaking when standing, severe decrease in range of motion of the joint, and pain. Pain medication was effective in relieving the pain, but it quickly returned as soon as the medication was stopped. The pet owner brought the dog to our hospital for proper treatment. The shape of the hip joints had changed from a normal smooth round shape to a pockmarked dish-shape, and the femoral head had become uneven from a smooth spherical shape, with the femoral neck full of growths. With such severe arthritis combined with being severely overweight, it was difficult to walk normally and the quality of life was severely affected. Our recommendation for the dog's treatment was total hip replacement surgery and weight loss.
We first used iBlueVet orthopaedic planning software to carry out precise preoperative planning for this Pomeranian. It was then replaced with a new artificial joint using BlueSAO's Small CanineandCat Bone Cemented Hip Replacement System.
The planned implants are #2 femoralstem, 14mm cup and (+0)8mm, (+2)8mm, (+4)8mm femoral heads.
Four X-rays were taken before surgery: anteroposterior pelvis, lateral pelvis, anteroposterior femur and lateral femur.
